Blood Sugar Imbalances

Blood Sugar Imbalances

Blood Sugar Imbalances services offered in Portland, OR

Blood sugar imbalances affect far more people than those with a diabetes diagnosis.
Reactive hypoglycemia, post-meal crashes, and chronic blood sugar instability are
common and undertreated - and they drive fatigue, cravings, brain fog, mood changes,
and hormonal disruption. Naturopathic physicians Rebecca Sand ND and Elizabeth
Emrick ND at Open Wellness PDX assess and treat the full spectrum of blood sugar
dysregulation using individualized lab testing, clinical nutrition, and targeted therapeutic
support. Call the Portland office, request a telehealth visit, or book online.

Blood Sugar Imbalances Q&A

What are blood sugar imbalances?

Blood sugar regulation exists on a spectrum. On one end is hypoglycemia; on the other is hyperglycemia and insulin resistance. Many people experience reactive hypoglycemia - a pattern where blood sugar spikes after eating and then crashes, triggering symptoms that are often misattributed to anxiety, fatigue disorders, or hormonal issues.

Symptoms of blood sugar dysregulation include energy crashes between meals, intense hunger or cravings especially for sugar or carbs, shakiness, irritability, difficulty concentrating, headaches, and waking at night between 2-4am. These patterns often co-occur with hormonal imbalances, adrenal dysfunction, and gut health issues.

How does naturopathic medicine address blood sugar imbalances?

Dr. Sand and Dr. Emrick use advanced lab testing - including fasting insulin and glucose, expanded lipid profiles, inflammatory markers, and nutrient levels - alongside tools like continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) to build a precise picture of each patient's blood sugar patterns throughout the day. Treatment may include therapeutic nutrition planning, evidence-based botanicals and nutrients including berberine, chromium, magnesium, alpha-lipoic acid, and green tea extract; amino acid support including taurine and glycine; nutrient optimization; stress and sleep support; and pharmaceutical options when appropriate.
